Introduction to Basic Navigation and Safety(2 days)

Suitable for complete beginners

Day Skipper Theory (6 days)

Most suitable for those with a little experience, especially those planning to attend a practical course and also those with experience who feel they need to refresh or update their knowledge.

Coastal Skipper /Yachtmaster
Theory (6 days)

A prerequisite for a practical assessment at either level, assumes knowledge and experience to Day Skipper level.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and/or CEVNI testing.

The ICC test is both theoretical and practical and in total takes 3-4 hours, for the practical part the candidate must provide an appropriate vessel (and crew if required).
A CEVNI endorsed ICC is required for most European inland waterways with the exception of The
Netherlands.

In addition to the above courses and tests the following one day courses can be arranged at or through Hoo Ness Yacht Club if there is sufficient demand. Note; non-members are welcome to attend any of the in house courses.

Diesel Engine Maintenance
Course Type : Theory, Adult Course
Pre-course experience : None
Assumed Knowledge : None
Course Content : Basic maintenance and engine care.
Course Goals: Awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require workshop support

Small Craft Radar Operation
Course Type : Theory
Pre-course experience : None
Assumed Knowledge : None
Course Content : Basic understanding of radar and set controls. Plotting and collision avoidance. Navigation techniques.
Course Goals : An understanding of how to use radar in a small boat.
Duration : 1 day

Basic Sea Survival
Course Type : Theory and practical, Adult Course
Pre-course experience : None
Assumed Knowledge : None
Course Content : Preparation for survival, lifejackets, medical issues, search and rescue techniques. It includes a practical session in a swimming pool to experience entering an inflated life raft whilst fully kitted out.
Course Goals: To gain a good knowledge of survival techniques, the safety equipment carried on small boats and spend valuable time doing practical drills in a life raft.

First Aid Afloat
Course Type : Theory, Adult & Junior Course
Minimum pre-course experience : None
Assumed Knowledge : None
Course Content : First aid and resuscitation techniques for yachtsmen, including a knowledge of the treatment for hypothermia.
Course Goals: An understanding of basic first aid afloat.
Duration : 1 day
Note; the course completion certificate has a life of 3 years and an in date one must be produced by anyone undertaking a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster practical assessment.

Marine VHF Radio Short Range Certificate Course
Course Type : THEORY
Pre-course experience : Nil
Assumed Knowledge : Nil
Course Content : Use of marine radio including GMDSS. Routine, distress and urgency procedures.
Course Goal: Competent use of a Marine VHF/DSC radio and the attainment of the marine radio "Short Range Certificate" and "Authority to Operate".
Duration : 1 day
